To Create a Safe Work Environment, Pupuk Kaltim Consistently Applies Life Saving Rules

PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (Pupuk Kaltim/PKT) is committed to optimizing the implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) aspects within the Company, in order to support the implementation of business activities properly and smoothly. One of them is shown through the implementation of Life Saving Rules (LSR) as a form of shared commitment between the Management and employees to implement and ensure that occupational health and safety regulations and standards are attached to every activity in the Company.

Director of Operations and Production of PKT Hanggara Patrianta said that LSR was a manifestation of the awareness of all PKT personnel in prioritizing OHS aspects, so that they can mitigate various potential risks due to work. LSR regulates the procedures for preventing accidents and enforcing discipline for all employees, as well as contractors working within the Company.

The implementation of LSR is a form of implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SMK3), which is carried out by PKT in accordance with Government Regulation Number 50 of 2012 concerning SMK3. "LSR provides ordinance guidelines for key principles, preparation, and implementation of OHS, as well as responsibilities and sanctions for all employees and contractors working within the Company," said Hanggara.

He explained that LSR emphasized on 4 main principles, namely worker protection, prevention from fatalities, risk awareness and safety guarantees. All of these principles are an effort to protect workers' rights to safety in carrying out their work, so that the accident rate can be minimized as small as possible.

In addition, PKT also continues to increase awareness of all related parties within the Company on the risk of work accidents, as well as concern for the safety of every activity carried out. This includes ensuring that everyone in the workplace and the community around the Company is protected against various potential hazards, as well as the impacts caused by actions that do not meet the requirements. "One of them is that every employee and other party who will carry out work in the Company's area is required to have a work permit in accordance with applicable procedures. A work permit may only be issued and signed by an official or officer who has the authority and is proven by a Work Permit Certificate (SIK)," added Hanggara.

Furthermore, LSR also regulates work in confined spaces, hot work, work at heights as well as Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures for every activity related to hazardous energy sources, and restrictions in the work environment to ensure work takes place in a safe condition. Likewise for violations that occur, PKT will impose sanctions according to applicable regulations. "PKT continues to prioritize OHS aspects in every process, in order to create a safe work environment, as well as investigate violations of LSR to ensure the enforcement of appropriate consequences," said Hanggara.

In implementing LSR in this 4.0 era, PKT has also developed various digital OHS systems including e-permit, we care, online share, online safety rep and healthy PKT. This is in line with the theme of the commemoration of the 2022 National OHS Month, namely the Application of OHS Culture in Every Business Activity to Support the Protection of Workers in the Digitalization Era. Hanggara ensured that PKT would continue to strengthen human resource capacity in the use of technology to support performance that refers to the OHS aspects consistently.

It is undeniable that the use of technology has various and complex risk values, so that it needs to be anticipated through the implementation of OHS in order to be able to reduce all potential risks of accidents and diseases due to work. “The implementation of OHS is a shared responsibility and the main focus of PKT in production activities. All employees are continuously encouraged to play an active role in making various efforts to prevent from all potential risks within the work unit," concluded Hanggara. (*)
